Growers of Quality Peaches and Apples
Since 1922
Situated in the rolling hills of the southeast corner of York County, Susquehanna Orchards has been producing high quality peaches and apples since the early 1920s'. It is family owned and operated orchard with about 300 acres planted with peach and apple trees, open fields, and wooded hills. The orchard lies near to the Susquehanna River about a mile north of the historic Mason Dixon line.
The southern uplands of York County provide good growing conditions for the special needs of peaches and apples - fertile soil, good drainage, some protection from late frosts, and cool autumn evenings. These factors combined with the selection of the best varieties adapted to the area and plain old hard work enable us to provide the public with fresh fruit that is difficult to find in large grocery chain stores. We do not have fruit all year long - we sell it when it's at its best.
Susquehanna Orchards grows many different varieties of fruit to answer the preferences and interests of our loyal customers. Many of our customers often prefer a particular variety of peach or apple because of its special qualities. For instance several varieties peaches are especially good for canning while others are best for freezing. Some apples are best for eating out of hand while others make great applesauce. Who can forget that first batch of Summer Rambo applesauce in late August, slightly tart and definitely not out-of-the-can flavor ? Or the snap of a Stayman-Winesap on a chilly October morning ?
We sell our apples and peaches out of a 100 year old barn where it is easy to see the wooden pegs that hold the log rafters together. The hay is long gone, now replaced with rows of wooden baskets with fresh fruit for your selection. You can get your fruit in any quantity. Our standard size is a 1/2 bushel basket which is about 30 lbs of peaches or 25 lbs of apples(apples are lighter - ask anyone who picks them !). We also sell pecks (1/4 bushel) and half pecks.
We carry a wide assortment of popular McCutcheons products to complement our fruit. In apple season we also sell pumpkins for the kids as well as fresh apple cider. In early September we have Pick-Your-Own Apples!
